A warm welcome for 90 first graders!

On September 6, 2008, we had the privilege of welcoming all in all 90 new students to our three schools

In our “mother elementary school“ in Prenzlauer Bern, the Christburg-Grundschule, the first year of school began for 53 students with the wonderful musical “School, school” by Juergen Ferrarÿ, performed by the 2nd graders for our “firsties”. They were magnetized as they watched different animals abandon their wrong ideas about school and eventually look forward to it. While the children were taken to their class rooms for their “first lesson” after the musical, to meet their home room teacher and their class, the parents had the chance to get acquainted over coffee and cake. The FESB T-shirts and polo shirts were well received and sold like hotcakes.

The Immanuel-Schule in Spandau had 19 new first graders. One of the teachers recalls their first day at school:

“Finally, the day came. On September 6, the new first grade students were warmly welcomed by Britta Bauchrowitz the principle of this school location. Thanks to the nice weather, the festivity could take place on the spacious patio. The new students were intrigued as they followed the Noah’s Ark musical, performed by older students. Every newbie then was given a picture of a rainbow with the words “God loves you” written on it. After a joint prayer, the abecedarians had a chance to inspect their class room and to get acquainted with their class mates and their teacher during a first “lesson”. The parents were meanwhile served coffee and cookies. Before the boys and girls headed home with their full school cones (cardboard cornet filled with sweets and little presents given to children in Germany on their first day at school; translator’s note), the families had the opportunity to document this significant first day at school by taking pictures in the class room.

Another teacher recounts the 18 new students’ first day at school in Hellersdorf’ Arche-Grundschule for us:

“Finally. The much anticipated day has come. They are happy and excited, some of them probably a little bit scared, as they sit in the first two rows below the stage: twenty little first graders. Twenty of God’s immensely valuable creatures whom He puts in our care so that we may help prepare them for their lives. The school principle Ms Bachnik and the older students offer them a warm welcome. The musical performed by older students conveys the clear message: everyone is welcome just as the way he is. After the musical, the newbies can finally enter their class room together with their teacher Ms Steffen and the two school care teachers, Ms Voss and Ms Knauft. Every child finds the table with his name tag and is once more warmly welcomed. Then we sit in a circle on our big carpet and celebrate the start of our time together as a new class. There is no doubt about one thing: All of us will need our Lord’s blessing and protection on every single day. Therefore, when our time is over we sing the song “Lord, your good blessing is like a big hat”. Now we have to say our goodbyes already. Too bad. But the good news is that we will have soooo much time together on Monday!”

Acknowledgement

We would like to thank all parents for their active help on this special day – e.g. for supplying delicious cakes for the “new” parents. The Christburg-Grundschule received a spontaneous donation of 450 Euros right after the musical – this donation is for a new sound system in the auditorium. Thank you! Furthermore we thank the following sponsors: Starbucks Schlossstrasse (Berlin Steglitz) donated coffee and surprise baggies for all new students, the YMCA Potsdam loaned us pieces of equipment for our musical, and the mission project BConnected loaned us instruments and other pieces of equipment.
