Corrie-ten-Boom-Schule Prenzlauer Berg

Prenzlauer Berg school premises

The junior high school is located in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district under the same roof as our elementary school on 14 Christburger Straße. The junior high school was founded in 1998, which means we can celebrate its 10-year anniversary in the same year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the FESB. Ten years ago, we opened the school with 18 girls and boys; today the Corrie-ten-Boom-Schule has 96 students and 13 teachers.

In our junior high school with grade levels 7 to 10, we put great emphasis on keeping and emphasizing learning as an enjoyable experience, because students often loose their enthusiasm for learning as they get older. We want every student to achieve the best possible results in their final exams, as this is their ticket into professional life or grammar school.

The usual number of students per class is 25. The 10th grade ends with a secondary level diploma.  The graduation average at the end of the school year 2005/2006 was 100 %, which means that all students were able to leave FESB with a secondary level diploma. In the school year 2006/2007, 96 percent of all 10th graders achieved the secondary level diploma. The Berlin average is a mere 80 percent.

Just as our first elementary school, the junior high school too had to get through the first few years without state funds. Finally, in July of 2002, we were granted an accreditation certificate for the junior high school. Until then, all expenses – roundabout half a million DM – had to be covered by school fees and donations. Also in July of 2002 we said our good byes to the first round of 10th graders – the moment filled us with joy and pride but also with a little bit of nostalgia.
